MAKÜ STUDENTS GATHERED AT YARIŞLI LAKE FOR WORLD WATER DAY EVENT

The World Water Day event was organized by Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University (MAKÜ) Wildlife Conservation, Rehabilitation Application and Research Center in cooperation with the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry 6th Regional Directorate.

On Friday, March 22, 2024, 40 students from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Biology of the Faculty of Science and Letters, 6th Regional Directorate Hunting and Wildlife Branch Manager Tamer YILMAZ, Burdur Branch Directorate technical staff, and Mustafa ERTURHAN participated in the event held at Burdur Yarışlı Lake with the theme “I Wonder How Many Species We Will See Here”.

Center Director Dr. Lecturer Yasemin ÖZDEMİR stated that this event, which they organized to draw attention to the importance and sustainable use of water, also stands out as an ecosystem that meets the vital needs of wildlife such as drinking, feeding, reproduction, and migration. Deputy Center Directors Dr. Lecturer Duygu Ceren ÇAĞLAN KAYA and Dr. Lecturer Harun ÇINAR conveyed information about the center's activities and goals and thanked the participating students.

Following the opening speeches, 6th Regional Directorate Hunting and Wildlife Branch Manager Tamer YILMAZ stated that water is an important part of ecosystems such as lakes, rivers, seas, and other water bodies, and that these ecosystems are critical for the conservation of biological diversity, the provision of habitats, and the delivery of ecosystem services. In this context, YILMAZ shared information about Yarışlı Lake, provided information about the species living in the lake, and shared the opportunity to see species such as flamingo, avocet, and pochard up close with the students using a telescope-binocular. Then, the students from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Biology who participated in the event visited the prehistoric goat and deer motif rock paintings and the strong source feeding Yarışlı Lake.

In the final part, the students expressed their satisfaction with the event and exchanged ideas about activities that could be carried out in the future and conveyed their requests.
